PR: FloydFest X ~ the eXperience

FLoyd, VA – March 25th 2011 – 2011 marks the 10-year anniversary of an event that has become a model for the independent, grassroots, multi-genre family friendly outdoor music festival. And in the way of marketing imagery, this anniversary edition of FloydFest X –Across-the-Way, the eXperience- is aptly named.

The “X”, according to spokespersons for the Floyd, Virginia, based Production Company, stands for all things ‘X’ usually represents (eXcept ‘ X-rated,’ although there is a little good old fashioned burlesque embedded in the theatre-based Yard Dogs Road Show performance).

It is eXponential, in that ticket sales for the festival, as of March 10th, are hovering at 100% over last year, trending to an early sell-out for an event that started in 2002 with 3000 people on a hurricane-soaked farm plateau off the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway near Floyd, Virginia.

It is ‘eXtraordinary’ in that the aforementioned parkway locale gives the venue a breathtaking beauty. Watching headlining performers on the magnificent custom timber framed Dreaming Creek main stage against a backdrop of trees and stars, with not a commercial building (or even vehicle allowed on the parkway) in sight, is a near-spiritual experience for anyone attending.

And the 2011 line-up could even be called ‘eXtreme’.  it’s being touted by producers as the “best of a decade” and includes favorite returning performers (culled from patron requests and responses over the years) Old Crow Medicine Show, Tony Rice, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Railroad Earth, North Mississippi All Stars, Donna the Buffalo, Sam Bush, Hot Tuna, and Del McCoury plus top-pick world music acts Xavier Rudd, Baka Beyond, Cyro Baptista, and Toubab Krewe with crowd-pleasers Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Carolina Chocolate Drops, and New Monsoon- to name just a few. Returning favorites will be joined by first-time FloydFest performers Taj Mahal, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and many more. The popular ‘Under the Radar’ series showcases a juried selection of lesser-known regional and national performers who compete for a headlining slot, studio recording time and a host of other prizes. With over one hundred total bands showcased on nine uniquely different performance stages and spanning Wednesday through Sunday, it could also be named ‘FloydFest- the Xtended version. ‘EXponential, eXtreme, eXtended- FloydFest X is definitely shaping up to be all that it proclaims- basically the music experience of the summer.

While ‘X-ing,’ you can’t forget ‘X marks the spot’- and whatever spot you’re looking to mark, FloydFest has it, too. About as much bang-for-your-buck as you’ll get at any event going, FloydFest offers as much diversity in the non-musical arena as it does within it; children are well occupied in a safe and central ‘Children’s Universe’ that features open-mic performances, stage entertainment, waterslide, martial arts workshops, free trapeze lessons, a gaming tent, and play equipment. Alternative-trending adults (and those just looking for a great massage) will thrill at the vast array of workshops and variants of alternative therapy- from tai chi to qigong to evening AA meetings. Food offerings are the best of any outdoor event, ranging from organic vegetarian to fresh fruit crepes to brick oven pizza and gator bites, plus solar smoothies, homemade doughnuts, local coffee, Virginia wines and craft beer-including Magic Hat, Starr Hill and Foothills Brewing. Over 100 regional artisans offer a selection of superior products ranging from handcrafted moccasins to instruments to clothes, jewelry and fine art- that the single ATM machine is hard pressed to offer support for.

What does offer priceless support, however, is the nearby, tightly-knit community of Floyd, Virginia. Signs of sustained local support are everywhere- in the stages, designed and built by local timber frame companies Dreaming Creek and Streamline Timber Works, the parking area named for neighboring winery Chateau Morisette, and the eco-built admin building by green manufacturers ACME Panel, the country’s only Structural Insulated Panels produced by solar energy.

The line “are you eXperienced?” rings as emblematic now as it did in 1967, when a core authenticity at the heart of a musical movement acted as the catalyst for momentous social change. ‘Greener’, sustainably operated, and family-friendly, FloydFest X holds all the same potential. Are YOU eXperienced?!
